How it works

A clear look at what we measure — and what stays private.

The Conflict Literacy Index is a 34-question diagnostic that scores 9capabilities behind healthy disagreement. Individual answers are never shown to anyone — not to your manager, your organization's contact, or us. Contacts and admins only see aggregates, and only once at least 5 people in a given cut have responded.

Conflict literacy is the ability to recognize conflict, understand what is happening, and respond without making it worse.

What we measure

Eight capabilities, 30 items total (a mix of three and four items per capability). Each item is a 1–5 Likert statement. Reverse-worded items (e.g. "I put off difficult conversations…") are flipped before scoring so higher is always better.

Click any capability to see why it matters, what it looks like when weak, and how to strengthen it.

How scoring works

  1. Each 1–5 answer is normalized to a 0–100 point value.
  2. Reverse-worded items are flipped so higher always means healthier.
  3. Your score for each capability is the mean of its items.
  4. Your overall score is the mean of the 9 capability scores.

You'll see your overall score, a band, your top strength, and your top growth area.

Fluent

80+

When conflict shows up, you tend to stay in the conversation rather than around it. People near you often describe you as steady when things get hard, and you're likely someone others come to when a difficult thing needs to be said.

Developing

65–79

You have real instincts for healthy conflict, and they show up unevenly. There are moments you handle with clarity, and moments where the harder version of the conversation gets postponed. The gap between the two is usually smaller than it feels.

Emerging

50–64

You see conflict clearly and you care about it going well — and the actual moment of naming it is where things get harder. Avoidance, reactivity, or softened feedback tend to show up more than you'd like. Most people who take this assessment land here.

Foundational

Below 50

Conflict likely feels risky, personal, or draining in your current environment. That says as much about the system around you as it does about you. What you're experiencing is real, and it isn't a character flaw.

Who sees what

Your login is only used to count that you participated — it is never tied to your answers in any report. No coach, org contact, staff member, or super admin can see your individual responses unless you choose to share them. Reports show group averages only.

Organization ContactAggregate scores across the organizations they staff — by role and capability. Averages only appear once ≥ 5 people have responded in that cut.Any individual response, name, or score — even for people they invited. Results are not broken out by department, because small departments can make individuals identifiable.

Methodology & effort

  • 34 questions, ~9 minutes.
  • • 1–5 Likert scale with reverse-worded items to reduce acquiescence bias.
  • • The nine-capability framework is drawn from JenFryTalks' organizational change practice.
  • • Limitations: self-report, a snapshot in time, and not a clinical or diagnostic instrument. Best used as a starting point for a conversation, not a verdict.
Being direct is not the same as being skilled at conflict.

For organizations

An organization contact invites their team with a link. Each person creates an account and takes the assessment on their own. As responses come in, the contact sees aggregate results — never individual answers — and can compare their team against cross-industry benchmarks.

FAQ

Can my manager see my individual answers?

No. Managers, org contacts, and admins only see aggregates. Your item-level answers and personal score are visible only to you.

What if only 2 people on my team respond?

Averages are suppressed until at least 5 people have responded in a given cut (team, role, department). Below that threshold the contact sees a "not enough responses yet" state instead of a number.

Can I retake it?

Yes. Retaking is encouraged after a workshop, a team change, or roughly every six months to see movement over time.

Is my data sold or shared?

No. Data is used to produce your results, your organization's aggregates, and anonymous cross-industry benchmarks. It is never sold or shared with third parties.

How is anonymity enforced technically?

Row-level security in our database prevents contacts and admins from ever querying individual responses. Aggregate endpoints return means and counts only, and refuse to return anything below the minimum group size.

Does my login connect me to my answers?

No. Your login only lets us count that you participated. In every report — for you, your org contact, and admins — your identity is kept separate from your answers.

Why aren't results broken out by department?

Departments are often small enough that a single answer could be traced back to a person. Leaving department out is a deliberate privacy choice so people can answer honestly.
